Anushka Sharma’s new avatar as a producer

Anushka Sharma to produce NH 10

When actors fade away, they make a desperate attempt to claw their way back, often producing their own vanity projects because nobody else will. Preity Zinta is a case in point. Her last role of any note was in 2008's forgotten Heroes. So she went ahead and produced the abysmal Ishkq In Paris that nobody but the principal cast and crew watched and consequently bombed, leading to heavy financial losses for the dimpled one. Preity will be seen next in Bhaiyyaji Superhit alongside Sunny Deol, but the dhai kilo ka haath star's similarly waning fortunes means that there is no guarantee if and when the film will be released. Preity will also be seen in Go Goa Gone directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K.'s Happy Ending but there she will be jostling for screen space with Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Govinda, Ileana and Kalki Koechlin, amongst many others. Unsurprisingly, Saif's Illuminati Films is producing the film and therefore the spotlight will squarely be on him and his begum. Let's just hope that Preity is not reduced to providing Happy Endings in the film.

Happily, Anushka Sharma is not in the same has been boat as Preity. She may be a bit out of sight out of mind for audiences, as she's not been seen since her sassy turn in Vishal Bharadwaj's underwhelming Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola earlier this year. Anushka has been away in Sri Lanka, playing the female lead opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Anurag Kashyap's magnum opus Bombay Velvet. She is also the female lead opposite Aamir Khan in Rajkumar Hirani's eagerly anticipated P.K., also starring jailbird Sanjay Dutt, who is now safely back behind bars. However, both of those films will not be released until next year.

Therefore, in a bid to stay in the news perhaps, Anushka has declared that she is going to be one of the producers of Navdeep Suri's new film NH 10, alongside production house Phantom's Vikramaditya Motwane, Anurag Kashyap and Vikas Bahl. Suri, you may recall is the director who made Manorama Six Feet Under. Let us hope that Suri manages to complete the film. His last venture, the zombie comedy Rock The Shaadi, starring Abhay Deol, is 50 percent complete but shows no sign of resuming production.

As always, we leave you with some platitudes.

Anushka Sharma, "I'm thrilled to get a chance to do this so early in my career. I couldn't have found a better project than NH 10 to kick-start this new phase in my film journey. This is my second film after Bombay Velvet with Phantom, and it's a blast working with them. It's going to be super-exciting working together again on what promises to be an explosive film."

Vikramaditya Motwane, "We love to partner with the talent we work with. It's extremely reassuring for us when the lead actor wants to join hands, to back an outstanding script like NH 10. We strongly believe in the script and know that Navdeep is going to make a kickass film out of it."
