Worst To Best: Sheryl Crow Albums

Sheryl Crow Los Angeles Performance Helad at The Greek Theater Featuring: Sheryl Crow Where: Los Angeles, California, United States When: 15 Sep 2013 Credit: FayesVision/WENN.com

With Sheryl Crow recently scoring her eighth consecutive U.S. Top 10 album with the country-focused Feels Like Home, here's a countdown of her previous seven studio efforts from worst to best.

7. 100 Miles From Memphis

Accompanied by everyone from Keith Richards to Justin Timberlake, Sheryl Crow went back to her roots for an effortlessly classy take on early '70s soul which cleverly avoided descending into pure pastiche.

6. Detours

Largely ignoring the personal battles that she'd had to face during the previous three years, Crow's sixth album was a highly political and environmental affair which consolidated her status as one of America's most intelligent singer-songwriters.

5. C'mon, C'mon

Drifting from old-school Californian pop to classic Americana, Crow returned from a lengthy absence in 2002 with an unashamedly retro record perfectly designed for cruising down the freeway on a hot summer's day.

4. Tuesday Night Music Club

Transforming Crow from a former Michael Jackson backing singer into a star in her own right, 1994 debut Tuesday Night Music Club's infectious mix of classic and contemporary instantly positioned her as the leading lady of the roots rock scene.

3. Wildflower

Often viewed as the lowpoint of Crow's career, Wildflower was criminally under-rated on its release in 2005. But while its eleven lushly-produced tracks fail to make much impression at first, its autumnal charms gradually begin to unfold with each listen.

2. Sheryl Crow

Home to a string of anthemic singles ("If It Makes You Happy," "Everyday Is A Winding Road," "A Change Would Do You Good"), Crow's eponymous sophomore LP was a wonderfully playful blend of alt-rock, blues, country, folk and hip-pop which proved she was far from a one-album wonder.

1. The Globe Sessions

Largely eschewing the poppier elements of its two predecessors, The Globe Sessions was a more introspective and bittersweet effort which saw her make a Bob Dylan out-take her own and produce arguably her most affecting single, "My Favorite Mistake."

EXCLUSIVE: Jason Dohring Talks 'The Tomorrow People,' Stunt Work and More

Jason Dohring, The Tomorrow People

The Tomorrow People star Jason Dohring gets to the bottom of it all...Who is Killian McCrane? How real are those action scenes?  What is it really like working up close and personal with Luke Mitchell?
How would you describe your character Killian McCrane?
I think it's best described that Killian is sort of a dark version of John, so as cool as John is there's a nastier evil side to this guy and they're both children of Jedikiah, both growing up at Ultra. Although coming from a similar place we arrive in different places. John is trying to stop him from killing humans and this mass terror that he is trying to inflict and I think John is the only one who could stop him.
How many actions scenes do we get with McCrane?
Probably 2 or 3 but they're good. It'll be an action-packed episode. I was so over confident when I went in, I was like, 'I do my own stunts,' but it was absolutely not what I expected. It was very Matrix, close fighting, punching, and catching.
We were rehearsing one day early in the morning and I heard a kind of commotion. Luke Mitchell was working with his stunt guy and grabs his head and has a cut on his forehead and had to go to the hospital for stitches. It was gnarly man, if you weren't paying attention you could really get hurt. That's why they devote so much time beforehand, you'll get together 3 days before your fight scene and they go over the choreography. So you run it over and over, it was very unique.
So you typically like these types of scenes?
Oh my gosh, yeah. It was the craziest stunt work I have ever done in my life by far. You have, 40 seconds of dialogue then I'm blasted with air then we fight, then we stop, then he goes flying across the room and I kill this other guy. It's just crazy.
Why has McCrane come out of hiding? Can you tell us when he'll be disappearing again?
He had to settle his thoughts and what he arrived at is the human race must die because all the drugs and experiments that were inflicted on him at Ultra equaled something done by humans equaled humans have to be destroyed, that type of thinking. So he comes out with an agenda to wipe out all the people that could destroy him. Goes on a terror rampage and John tries to stop him.
How was it working with the cast of The Tomorrow People?
Well, Luke is so handsome, first of all (chuckles). It's cool because they're really into the show, which is fantastic. You can see 100% effort and you can see 70% effort and they wanted to do all their fight stuff, giving it 100%. They're very professional and they really care about what they're doing.
The Tomorrow People airs tonight, October 30, at 9PM ET on The CW.

The alleged love birds took to a social networking site to exchange their travel plans. Nargis is said to have travelled from Thailand, where she was shooting for an upcoming film, to New York to celebrate her birthday with her family. After this, the model-turned-actress apparently joined Uday Chopra in LA.
Says a source, "After she wrapped up her family commitments, she flew to LA to be with Uday. His friends are shocked that he preferred to spend time with Nargis than attend the event in the run-up to his last film's release." However, Nargis' spokesperson says, "Nargis is not in LA. She is in Thailand."

Camille Grammer: Granted Restraining Order Against Dimitri Charalambopoulos - See more at: http://www.thehollywoodgossip.com/2013/10/camille-grammer-granted-restraining-order-against-dimitri-charal/#sthash.MhcA1ZjE.dpuf

We have an update on the alleged incident that went down between Camille Grammer and Dimitri Charalambopoulos inside a Houston hotel room on October 16.
Camille Grammer in Blue

As previously reported, Grammer has accused her ex-boyfriend of assault, Tweeting a number of emotional messages yesterday and telling followers she feared for "her life" at the hands of Charalambopoulos.
TMZ, meanwhile, confirms that Camille was granted a restraining order today about her former lover.

The document states that Charalambopoulos received a text message from a woman around 1:30 a.m. on the 16th of this month and that this same woman proceeded to call Dimitri and yell at him.

These exchanges led to an argument between Camille and Dimitri and to the latter subsequently grabbing his girlfriend's hair and repeatedly slamming her skull into the headboard.

Grammar says many follicles were yanked out in the process and that Charalambopoulos destroyed her iPhone when she tried calling for help.

According to the legal filing, Camille alleges Dimitri "squeezed my nose between his finger and pushed upward forcefully, covering my mouth in an attempt to silence me to prevent me from breathing."

He is also accused of pounding Grammer's head and face into the furniture and "complete immobilizing" the reality star.

Camille estimates that the abused lasted a minimum of 40 minutes and that Dimitri threatened to knock her out if she moved off the bed when he finally left the room.

A judge has granted a temporary restraining order that requires Charalambopoulos stay 100 yards from Grammer and her two children.

Our Dr. Seuss-Inspired Poem Helps You Deal with the Jonas Bros Breakup

VINA DEL MAR, CHILE - FEBRUARY 26: Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas (L-R) perform at the Quinta Vergara during the 53rd Vina del Mar International Music Festival on February 26, 2013 in Vina del Mar, Chile. (Photo by Marcelo Benitez/LatinContent/GettyImages)

When news broke about the Jonas Brothers breaking up, there was a surprising groundswell of passion from their fans, fans who were devestated that not just their favorite band, but the band they based their entire lives around, had split. These fans are now entering into a whole new post-Jonas phase of pop culture participation. It's a long standing tradition that on the eve of some big event — be it a graduation or a new job — a considerate well-wisher will bestow unto the party in question Dr. Suess' Oh the Places You'll Go. The book expresses not just wishes of good luck, but conveys the spectacular possibilities ahead. The combination of reassuring advice and whimsical rhyme is the perfect antitdote to the hysteria of uncertainty. So if you find yourself experiencing palpitations at the thought of losing Joe, Nick, and Kevin, read on:
So the JoBros broke up and you're all very sad,
But as you read my advice, please, don't get mad.
There's a whole lot of entertainment out there.
And I'm sure as time passes you'll find plenty to spare!
You can scratch the itch of whatever you miss,
About the three brothers (whose last name is Jonas.)
Perhaps you love bands made up only of boys,
Whose crushworthy faces could be plastered on toys.
It's no longer the '90s, when we all had that affection,
But there's one band that's perfect for you: One Direction.
Sure, they're not Jonases when push comes to shove,
But they easily top the charts with their songs about love.
Now, say what you loved about these Brothers of Jo,
Was the way they were able to seamlessly go
From their careers as muscians to TV stars on E!
Then there's one show that would be perfect for... ye.
Consider The Wanted Life, on Fridays, at 10.
You'll never need more backstage drama again.
But if instead what you loved was the Disney Channel
And how it made the J.B.s into something quite substantial.
Stay far away from the Selenas and Mileys
They may once have been Disney, but got out of it slyly.
For while Miley can shock all the world with her tongue,
You would prefer to watch something more wholesomely fun.
When the sun sets, turn on your TV and delight —
Enjoy something on late that's known as "Nick at Nite."
There corny old sitcoms take on a new glow,
You'll certainly find a brand new favorite show.
Now if it's siblings you're after, ones who love singing
There's plenty around that I won't bother bringing.
But if you desire ones who could pass for twins,
Then Tegan and Sara will gladly fill in.
They're identical in all but the fewest of ways,
And their songs will be stuck in your head for days.
I hope you now know there are multiple options,
No need to stick to a strict Jonas Bro doctrine.
And if you need more, we'll be glad to provide
So you're all able to take this sad news in stride.

Something brewing between Sajid Khan and Esha Gupta?

Sajid Khan and Esha Gupta's closeness on the sets of director's next 'Humshakals' has managed to raise eyebrows

Esha Gupta

Buzz from the unit of Sajid Khan's upcoming film 'Humshakals' is about the director's proximity to the actress of his film Esha Gupta. Unit hands state that it was apparent that the two are extremely close as they spent a lot of time with each other.
Says a unit source, "They bonded well and it looked more than just a director-actress thing. The two have suddenly found things in common to give them company. Their close friendship raised eyebrows on the sets." While shooting for the film in England recently, there was buzz that all is not well on the sets between Esha and Bipasha Basu, who is the other leading lady in the film.
Though Bips and Esha had worked earlier in Raaz 3, they apparently hit a rough patch for their second B-Town outing together. The reason for the cold vibes was that Bips was apparently irked that Sajid was favourably inclined towards Esha.
Adds the source, "Though Bipasha had later made it a point to deny it, the truth is far from it." When Esha was selected for the film, there was speculation that this was the role, which was to be played by Sajid's ex Jacqueline Fernandez.
After they split, she was out of the film. Some other names were tossed around but eventually Esha bagged the role. And looks like he is her new buddy in B-Town. Says Sajid, "Why only Esha? I am buddies with Tammanah (who also features in his film) and Bipasha as well. It's always great to work with friends."

Sunny Leone shies away from showing bare back!

She was a full-fledged adult film actress in the US but looks like her advent in Bollywood has made Sunny Leone coy. Sunny Leone

According to sources, Sunny was required to shoot a sequence in a shower with her shoulder and back exposed to the cameras. Instead the actress apparently wanted to don a costume for a cover-up act.
A unit-hand says, "Director Bhushan Patel lost his cool and called up producer Ekta Kapoor, who apparently had to intervene. Sunny's contract with the producers binds her to show her skin in the film."
It was apparently only after Sunny heard from Ekta that she finally agreed to do the shot. Tanuj Garg, CEO of the production house, says, "You'll see Sunny's back in the trailer. What's the big deal about showing one's back?"

Ram Leela Gets A 'UA' From Censorboard

Ram Leela Gets A

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's eagerly-awaited Ram Leela was cleared on Friday by the Censorboard Of Film Certification without any verbal or visual cuts.

But with a 'UA' certificate. That is to say, children can only watch Ram Leela accompanied by grownups.

All of SLB's earlier films Khamoshi: The Musical, Hum...Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas ,Saawariya barring Guzaarish have been granted 'U' certificates.

Says a source from Sanjay Bhansali Productions, `Sanjay Sir expected a 'UA' for Ram Leela. The basic storyline is violent and there are lots of guns in the film.Having said that the censor board has been extremely liberal with the aggressive language and the violence. They understood the context and completely empathized with SLB's need to turn aggressive in Ram Leela.`

Incidentally Sanjay Bhansali was busy with the censoring on Friday and therefore skipped a promotional event with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone at Mehboob studios.

`There was no big mysterious fight or tension. Sanjay was looking into the censoring of Ram Leela. That's why he cancelled the event at Mehboob,` says a member of the Ram Leela team.

Selena Gomez’s Crazy Confession: I Get Told I’m Not Sexy Enough

Selena made a shocking mid-concert announcement to an arena full of fans — but are we looking at the same girl? Selena is NOTHING short of sexy!

Here's some head-tilting news: Selena Gomez revealed she's told every day that she isn't sexy! The "Slow Down" singer, 21, made the shocking confession to a sold-out arena of fans Oct. 19 in Uncasville, Conn., adding that she's also told she isn't cool enough. She said she's told that if she acted differently, people would actually "love" her.

Selena Gomez Thanks Fans For Their Support

Fortunately, Selena doesn't take any of that outside negativity to heart. The former Wizards of Waverly Place star thanked her fans for always supporting her and loving her for who she is. She told them, "I don't have to do any of that to have love!"

We couldn't agree more!

Selena Gomez Supports Miley Cyrus

Selena looks super sexy in the music video for "Come And Get It," even while opting to remain covered up. We have to had it to Selena; it's not easy pulling off sexy and classy at the same time!

But what about Selena's fellow former Disney star Miley Cyrus? She bared all in her "Wrecking Ball" video, and took some major heat for it! Even though Selena and Miley seem like polar opposites, Selena's still a Smiler.

She told Go'Morgan Denmark, "Hey, I don't judge people. To each their own."

Selena later told the talk show she chooses to cover up for her fans, because most of her fans are very young. And unlike Miley, Selena feels she hasn't quite made the transition from child to adult and has decided to wait before taking it all off.

What about YOU Hollywood Lifers? Should Selena sex-up her image? Sound off!

Miley also revealed what she's really focusing on now that Liam is out of her life. Unfortunately no, she didn't say Theo Wenner.

"I need to treat my music like a relationship," Miley said, "give it time and and all the attention it deserves. That's my main love right now."

Actress’ uncle, cousin arrested for years of abuse, death threats

Actress' uncle, cousin arrested for years of abuse, death threats

The Faridabad police on Saturday arrested an uncle and cousin of upcoming actress Nikunj Malik over allegations that they harassed her mother and threatened to kill her family if she did not quit the entertainment industry. Twenty-eight-year old Malik, whose showbiz career took off in 2010 following an appearence on 'Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayenge', currently stars in Anil Kapoor's television show '24' and will be seen in the upcoming film 'Revolver Rani'.

She told TOI from Faridabad, "My uncles and other relatives were against me pursuing a career in Bollywood right from the start (2010), and put a lot pressure on my parents to get me to quit my profession." She added, "They threatened my parents with dire consequences if I did not quit. They managed to influence my father, who is also against my career in Bollywood. It is only my mother who has supported me."

For supporting her choice of career, her mother has been subjected to physical assault and death threats, Nikunj claims. Narrating an incident from January this year, she says, "My uncle forced himself into our house and assaulted my mother. He told her: 'We came to your house and told you fours ways you could save yourself. You didn't listen to us; now you must face the consequences'."

As the harassment continued, Nikunj finally filed a police complaint against her relatives in at Sector 7 police station, Faridabad, in July. However, as there had little movement in the case, she decided to visit Faridabad herself over the weekend. Her efforts finally bore fruit, and the police arrested her paternal uncle Mahavir Singh and his son Amit Malik.

She said, "My mother even has a recording of the threats they gave her on the phone. It is only after hearing them that the police arrested my uncle and his son and filed an FIR." Inspector Manoj Kumar of Sector 7 police station in Faridabad said, "We have arrested them for threatening the family. the sections applied on them are 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 452 (trespassing with a plan to assault or restrain someone), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of the Indian Penal Code.''

Nikunj said, "They told my parents they would kill them if they did not call me back home. They threatened my mother, who has been my sole supporter. This forced me take action against my relatives." Detailing the abuse her parents faced, she said, "They would come home and threaten my parents, asking my for my address in Mumbai. They said they would travel to Mumbai and bring me back with them." Despite the arrests, however, Nikhunj says she remains worried for her personal safety and that of her mother. She said, "They might seek revenge over the arrests. You can never predict the behaviour of criminals - they are very shrewed people."

Pooja Bedi fears Anita Advani scenario, sells mother's house

Pooja Bedi fears Anita Advani scenario, sells mother's house

On October 22, TOI broke the story that Pooja Bedi had asked her father Kabir Bedi and his partner Parveen Dusanj to vacate her Juhu flat, after a conflict between the two women came to a head. We now bring you the latest on the family feud. TOI has it that Pooja has sold the flat, which originally belonged to her mother Protima Bedi, fearing an attempt to usurp the property. A source close to the Bedis reveals that Pooja feared an Anita Advani scenario (Anita, had staked claim to Rajesh Khanna's Carter Road bungalow Aashirwad after his death leading to litigation between her and Khanna's family).

Said the source, "What if Parveen refused to leave the house? It wouldn't have been easy to ask her to her leave then." Though Kabir had reportedly married Parveen eight years ago, sources close to the family tell us that both Pooja and her step-brother Adam Bedi do not have any knowledge about their father's nuptials.

Parveen and Pooja shared a good rapport for years but sources say that the relationship denigrated in the past months when Pooja was told that Parveen was bad-mouthing her. "Pooja had allowed Kabir and Parveen to stay in her Juhu house because she connected well with Parveen. But she put her foot down and asked her to leave because she had enough reasons to believe that Parveen was eyeing the flat," added the source. Pooja's circle of friends then advised her to take immediate action to avoid a property dispute. The conflict saw Kabir caught between the two most important women in his life.

"Pooja has nothing against her father but the step had to be taken," said the source. TOI also has it that Adam and his wife Nisha Harare too could not get along with Parveen and have distanced themselves from her.

Added the source, "The situation in the Bedi family is very sticky at the moment. But they are working on a patch-up but yes, Kabir and Parveen cannot go back to that Juhu house for sure." Confirming that Pooja had sold the Juhu flat in question, Nisha added, "Our family has always come out of adverse situations. Even this shall pass. Pooja is my sister-in-law but I consider her my sister. I want to see her happy."

Actress Priyanka Chopra, who has worked with Bollywood biggies like Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan, has also recorded tracks with international singers like Pitbull and Will.i.am. And she is willing to go wherever her work takes her.
"Even my music wasn't planned. I consider myself an actor, be it in Hindi films, English, Punjabi, Tamil, it doesn't matter, as long as it is a fun part. I don't make plans, I am not saying that I am going to establish myself in Hollywood," the 31-year-old said here Friday at an event celebrating the success of her second single "Exotic".
"I am focussing on my music and movies. Wherever my music or movies take me, across the shores, at home, I will go," she added.
Meanwhile, Priyanka confesses that she would love to sing for a contemporary actress as long as the song is good.
"I think it will be very cool if I can sing for another actress because now I am a professional singer. But my voice is distinct so, I think it will be too much of a disparity," Priyanka said.
"But it doesn't depend on actors, it depends on the song. I like singing, so the song should be good. (I would like to sing for) any of my contemporary actresses, they all are so great," she added.
Priyanka turned singer with the international single "In My City" last year and later released her second single "Exotic" in July this year.

Salman is a fakir, who lives a simple life: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, 50, is most comfortable only with himself. While he is fond of his mother and sister, he can be most honest and transparent only with himself. He is extremely observant and sensitive and has come to the view that relationships don't work for him. He gives all to his work and lives his life through his characters. Ahead of his upcoming film Ram-Leela, he talks to TOI about his love-hate relationship with his father, his mentor Vidhu Vinod Chopra and what made him add Leela to his name. Excerpts:
Salman is a fakir, who lives a simple life: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

How did you think of becoming a filmmaker?
My grandfather was a rich man who stayed in a bungalow in Walkeshwar, but by 25, he went bankrupt and we had to move into a 200 sq ft place where, for a bathroom, you had to wait in a line for two hours. My father produced films in the 50s, but they were films like Jaazi Lootera that I have never seen. I was five when he took me with him to a studio, where a cabaret was being pictured. I was wondering why this girl was wearing so little clothes, was eating an apple and was jumping on a man with equally little clothes and then they kept throwing this apple at each other as it was not reaching the correct point. I was fascinated. I would wait for hours to listen to Vividh Bharati and would look at the small mirror and dance to Shammi Kapoor songs. I had to go through the red light area to go to school, as we lived two lanes from there. That one lane had six theatres, so life was fascinating. Then one day, a makeup trunk came with all kinds of wigs and costumes and that was the Pandora's box for me. I decided to be a director. Even though I was a brilliant student, going to college were the worst years of my life, as I was going there only to complete my graduation. I joined the film institute in the editing course and that is where I thought I would blossom. I lost my father while I was at the institute and did not know where to start till Vidhu Vinod Chopra came there and hired me to shoot a song in Parinda. I then landed up assisting Vinod for seven years.

What did you learn from Vinod?
I learnt the courage to speak and be fearless from him. He would write on his board — 'Damn I am good' with his autograph. He taught me to believe in my work and pushed me to speak. He would say, 'If you don't speak, how will you arrange your monies, how will you speak to your actors?' That was the opening phase. Of course, once I started speaking, I was told to speak less. I learnt the discipline and focus with which he worked. I would go for all music sittings with him and would sit at RD Burman's feet while he was composing his songs for 1942: A Love Story. Burmanda would say, 'If you want to celebrate a good song, you must eat and celebrate and order good food immediately. In 50 minutes flat, he made Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga, threw the pen and said, 'Machhi mangao' and went straight to the kitchen to cook food. That innocence to discover and being excited about your work is what I learnt from these two people. Of course, RD passed away and did not live to see the success of his music.

Talk about RD Burman?
He was gorgeous, sitting in his black silk kurta and black silk lungi, records beautifully lying and stacked there in his white room with white gaddis and his harmonium with his unclear conversation and a sparkle in his eye, to listen to some new sound. I was mad about that man's music. His openness made him a great music director. Nobody lives music the way he did. I learnt to listen to people from him, even if it was from an assistant. Never to feel afraid of criticism is what I learnt from him. He was going through a critical time. The industry had moved him out. He had no work. A music company came to Vinod and said, 'Move him out of 1942 and we will give you double the money' and, of course, Vinod did not agree and asked them to leave the room. Burmanda was large-hearted. A man who would feed people when he made a good song. It was 7.30 in the morning and I was listening to a song from Kati Patang when Farah (Khan) called me to say dada was gone.

Let's talk about your father?
All through my childhood, I was told that films did not make money and that it was a world not meant to be in. There were a lot of people we had to take money from and a lot of people we needed to pay money to. I remember my grandmother would take me walking from Bhuleshwar to Colaba to collect 10,000 from a producer we had lent money to, in the past. That man would make us wait for hours and all through walking back, she would keep telling me how not to be in films. And yet my father took me 18 times to see Mughal-e-Azam. He introduced me to all kinds of music ranging from Bade Ghulam Ali Khan sahab's to Dada Kondke's. So I was completely confused as a child. We would be put into a good school, but would need to borrow money from our relatives to pay the fees. They would procrastinate giving it to us. The fact that they would come and ask for the money back would make me not come out of the house. I started feeling isolated. I relied only on music for anchorage and I would go into my imaginary world. My father had a love for life and lived it king-size even though we could not afford it. So I went to the other extreme of complete deprivation and simplicity to save for the times to come. I loved him immensely, but could not express it. Today, I regret that. I wish he was alive today. I get my angst, aesthetics and suffering from him. I feel the presence of the man as I am too average a person to have made the films I have. I still go to our old house, playing old music in my car to experience him. I am fulfilling what he dreamt.

Are there stars you worked with who are your friends?
They come and go and all the relationships are transitory and transactional. But I would call Salman and Rani my friends. They have been people I have been closest to and have loved immensely. I realise that I don't want anything from them and nor do they. Salman was temperamental. Sajid and Farah Khan had talked to him about me being this struggling director during Khamoshi when I first went to meet him at Filmistan. It was my birthday and he made me wait for six hours. But surprisingly, when he saw me, he said, 'I know you. We have some karmic connection.' He was a good man and cared for small things, but tried to be a brat. Inside he is a fakir, who lives a simple life. Rani lives for her parents and people she loves and is very expressive. They both gave me a lot of belief in myself.

Director Gabriella Cowperthwaite Talks 'Blackfish', Influencing Pixar, and Sea Sanctuaries

PARK CITY, UT - JANUARY 19: Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite attends the "Blackfish" premiere at Temple Theater during the 2013 Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2013 in Park City, Utah. (Photo by Chad Hurst/Getty Images)

In 2010, a killer whale at Sea World named Tilikum attacked and killed one of the park's top animal trainers, Dawn Brancheau. The organization's official statement was that it was a tragic accident, caused by Brancheau's ponytail becoming tangled in the whale's teeth. However, some Sea World employees began to speak out about the incident, claiming that the park was misrepresenting the events, which caught the attention of several reporters and filmmakers. One such filmmaker was Gabriella Cowperthwaite, who decided to investigate the tragedy and educate people about the devastating effects of keeping killer whales in captivity in her documentary, Blackfish.

The film earned rave reviews after playing the Sundance Film Festival and its July theatrical premiere, but now movie-goers who may have missed the chance to see Blackfish can catch its television premiere on CNN tonight, October 24 at 9 PM. We sat down with Cowperthwaite to discuss the film, its surprising influence on Pixar and the message she wants audiences to take away from Blackfish.

Why don't we start with what drew you to this particular story, and what about Dawn Brancheau's death made you feel that it was something that people needed to know about?
I basically heard about the story of Dawn Brancheau's death, didn't know anything about killer whales, and don't come from any animal activism. But just thought it was really, incredibly tragic but really strange that a killer whale would kill a top trainer at Sea World, because I know that killer whales don't kill us.  So, I wanted to figure out what happened, so I came in with that question, and then from that moment, started peeling back the onion.

You had some former Sea World employees speak in the film. How did you get in touch with them, or were they the ones reaching out to you?
I reached out to them, although they had already been vocal in the media about Dawn Brancheau's death. They had said that Sea World was basically blaming her and that they smelled a rat inside. "The spin coming out of Sea World doesn't swear with anything we ever experienced when we were working there." They also had been interviewed in "Killer in the Pool," which is an article by Outside Magazine by Tim Zimmerman. That article was revelatory for me, and Tim came aboard as my associate producer shortly thereafter. They had spoken with and been interviewed by him, so after that I was able to interview them.

Blackfish contains some found footage of Sea World tours and even Tillikum's attack. How did you come across that footage, and did you have any legal trouble with using it?
A lot of it came to me through the Freedom of Information Act. When OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) came after Sea World and took them to court, a lot of video basically became exhibits in the court case, so then it's subject to Freedom of Information Act, which is public record. So, I filed for Freedom of Information Act and maybe like, six months or a year later, was able to get some footage.

Did you face a lot of legal opposition from Sea World as a result of making this film? Have they tried to contact you about it?
Sea World has responded to the film, in July, right before the theatrical premiere, and then they said that basically, "this is misleading, it doesn't take into account all the good we do," and they made some points in there that we just very quickly debunked because the facts in the film are irrefutable. They're facts, you know, and they just happen. But that's really all we've heard from them, and since then there's been no legal challenges or anything like that.

The film has received a lot of strong, positive reactions. Were you expecting that? Did you know that people would respond to Blackfish so strongly?
I didn't know. As a documentary filmmaker, you're so excited that people are actually seeing you film, you know? You never know if it's just going to be this niche little group that sees it, and so I've been blown away and I've been stunned by the fact that a lot people have gone to see it in theaters and everything, and that people are going to tune in to CNN this Thursday when it has its broadcast premiere.

I know that the team behind Finding Dory actually got in touch with you to discuss Blackfish and possibly made some changes to the film as a result. Without giving too much away, how did they get in contact with you, and what did you consult on?
Basically, Pixar screens films from Sundance sometimes, and Pixar screened Blackfish, and I went up there to do a Q&A, and I just remember after screening the film there that they were very quiet and somewhat uncomfortable. So, we spoke later and they were just very interested in learning more about some of the premises in the film. These are people who do their homework, right? Their films last forever. So they needed to cover all bases and know everything before moving ahead with their script. I'm told that they were pretty inspired, and potentially made some changes.

The film focuses solely on killer whales, but in the course of your research, did you find that there were other animals facing the same kind of problems in captivity?
Blackfish only focuses on killer whales, and that's kind of the only area I'm very sure about. I will say that out of all the animals in captivity, animals that tend to be free-ranging, highly intelligent, animals who have self-recognition, who grieve their young, who have, really, these complex brains and lives fare the worst in captivity. And then out of that group, killer whales fare the worst. So, even out of that group of animals who generally don't do well in captivity, killer whales are at the top of that list.

What is the one thing you want people to take away from the film? Or, alternatively, if someone doesn't get to see this movie, what is the one thing you want them to think about?
I think that there's two things. One is that I want people to start thinking about the idea of a sea sanctuary, because I think that's where this whole industry is headed. Sea sanctuaries are essentially the ocean, an ocean cove that's enclosed by a net and you can retire some of these animals to that environment. You can't toss them back in the ocean like people think you can. Their teeth are all broken, they're on antibiotics, a lot of them, they don't know how to hunt, they can't chase down their own food, but putting them in a sea sanctuary is essentially like a retirement. And I think you could charge money to go have people see a killer whale actually being a killer whale for the first time. I think that actually would be an amazing thing for people to see, and so that's the first thing. I think that Blackfish is trying to get that message out. And I think the second message is just that I hope people understand that just because something's magnificent, and out there and you're curious about it, it doesn't mean that it's yours for the taking.

Will Jamie Dornan Be a Better '50 Shades of Grey' Star Than Charlie Hunnam Would Have Been?

Charlie Hunnam, Jamie DornanWENN / Getty

Once again, we have our Christian Grey. Two week ago, Charlie Hunnam abruptly exited the Fifty Shades of Grey film and left producers scrambling to replace him in order to start shooting in November. After announcing that the film was to be released Aug. 1, 2014, the production seemed plagued with delays, including rumors of a bad script as well as uninterested actors. However, everything seemed to fall into place when Hunnam and Dakota Johnson were cast. At first, there were mass protests over the casting choices, but eventually book fans began to tacitly accept a world in which Hunnam and Johnson would play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. However, the departure of Hunnam forced producers (who had originally taken their time to find the right actors) into hastily recasting the role. Now that it looks like Jamie Dornan is closing in on a deal, we're breaking down who would have made the better Christian Grey.

The Talent:
When Hunnam was cast, a few of us immediately jumped on the "I Love Charlie" bandwagon. We started rewatching his hit show Sons of Anarchy and basically stalked his films to make sure he had the acting chops to play Christian Grey. Say what you will about Hunnam, but he's definitely exhibited some chops. Keeping this in mind, we have confidence that Hunnam could pull off the controversial role in a way that would make him the toast of Hollywood, rather than being the embarrassing mistake to end his career.

Dornan, on the other hand, is a relative unknown and, in my opinion, probably not as great of an actor as Hunnam. A previous model, Dornan has had small parts on ABC's Once Upon a Time and the 2006 adaption of Marie Antoinette, but he hasn't starred in any large studio productions. Hopefully, Dornan has some hidden acting chops that he will whip out (pun intended) for Fifty Shades but, if he doesn't, this could be a serious issue for fans, and a possible quick end to the film franchise.

Winner: Charlie Hunnam

The Looks:
While Charlie Hunnam is no doubt a hottie, he doesn't exactly fit the description of Grey, who was written as having messy dark copper hair and gray eyes. In Hunnam's defense, these aspects of his appearance could have easily been changed, because the rest of him — from his bod to his height — fit Christian to a T.

Jamie Dornan, however, naturally looks more like Grey with his dark curly hair and gray eyes (and I didn't even know it was possible to have gray eyes). Oh, and he also has a pretty nice body... he was a Calvin Klein model, so there's no arguing that.

Winner: Jamie Dornan

The Chemistry:
Hunnam famously discussed his chemistry with Johnson, saying, "As soon as we got in the room and I started reading with Dakota I knew that I definitely wanted to do it. There's just like a tangible chemistry between us. It felt exciting and fun and weird and compelling." This quote immediately went viral and got audiences excited to see these two actors bring these roles to life, especially when the chemistry, which is so important in the book, would be visible on screen.

Although I'm sure Dornan also has some chemistry with Johnson, no one has labeled it 'tangible' yet so I'm not convinced. Hopefully, the couple will prove me wrong, but it seems that, since Grey had to be recast so quickly, that there is no way the producers were worried about a pesky little thing like chemistry.

Winner: Charlie Hunnam

On behalf of the rest of those underwhelmed by Hunnam's replacement, we really do hope that the Dornan can step into the Christian Grey shoes and pull it off convincingly. Otherwise, fans will hate him forever and never see another one of his movies... or is that just me?

What do you guys think? Can Jamie Dornan pull off the role, or is this just a film that's destined fail?
