Angelina Jolie writes op-ed piece about Iraq camps

Just days after Angelina Jolie was photographed on a visit to northern Iraq, the "Unbroken" director has written an impassioned opinion article about her trip.

The 39-year-old is a special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and co-founder of the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative. She wrote through the columns of the New York Times after her trip to a refugee camp in Khanke in Iraq Sunday, reports usamagazine.com.

The camp was set up in December 2014 and hosts displaced Iraqis who fled after surviving kidnappings and other attacks by jihadists from the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

She describes the devastation she witnessed in refugee camps and calls for action to help the millions of displaced Syrians and Iraqis who no longer have a home.

"I have visited Iraq five times since 2007, and I have seen nothing like the suffering I'm witnessing now," she wrote in the opinion piece, published by the newspaper Tuesday.

"For many years I have visited camps, and every time I sit in a tent and hear stories. I try my best to give support. To say something that will show solidarity and give some kind of thoughtful guidance. On this trip I was speechless," she added.

As previously reported, the mother of six visited the Khanke camp for Internally Displaced People. While there, she spoke with victims of ISIS, some of whom she describes in her opinion editorial.

"What do you say to the 13-year-old girl who describes the warehouses where she and the others lived and would be pulled out, three at a time, to be raped by the men? When her brother found out, he killed himself," Jolie writes.

She continued: "How can you speak when a woman your own age looks you in the eye and tells you that her whole family was killed in front of her, and that she now lives alone in a tent and has minimal food rations?"

Gomez's new hairdo homage to Aniston?

Singer Selena Gomez's latest hairdo looks a lot like Jennifer Aniston's "Rachel" haircut from hit show "Friends".

Gomez has chopped off her locks and opted for medium length, subtle forehead fringe and layers just like Aniston's character Rachel in the popular sitcom, reports eonline.com.

"We have the same manager. She's just like a little cherub that I feel like I wanna take care of. And we've just met through our manager. She's been extremely supportive and wonderful," said Aniston.

Box office: Akki's 'Baby' fails to cash in on the four-day weekend

Both Akshay Kumar's 'Baby' and Sonam Kapoor starrer 'Dolly Ki Doli' barely manage to cash in on the four-day weekend at the box office

Exhibhitors had hoped that last Friday's releases would reap good dividends in the long four-day weekend, but the collections of 'Baby' and 'Dolly Ki Doli' have left them disappointed. In the extended weekend, Neeraj Pandey's 'Baby' featuring Akshay Kumar, grossed Rs 40 crore while Sonam Kapoor-starrer 'Dolly Ki Doli' managed to rake in only about Rs 11 crore.

Exhibitor Rajesh Thadani says, "The two films collected some decent numbers but they were well below our expectations."

Vishal Anand of Fun Cinemas says 'Baby' was the audience's pick with the film earning rave reviews. He says, "People who saw the film liked its plot. This was encouraging, considering the lukewarm response that the last few releases have received. Since Monday was a national holiday, the film's collections Tuesday onwards will actually give us an idea of how its business is going to shape up. 'Dolly Ki Doli' fared decently in India's northern belt."

However, trade analyst Komal Nahata suggests that the collections of the two films dropped on Monday. He points out, "The numbers for both the films picked up on Saturday and moved further up on Sunday, but they took a nosedive on Monday. It does not require intelligence (to say) that both 'Baby' and 'Dolly Ki Doli' are going to entail losses. 'Baby' is poised to lose more as it is high priced."

Was Alam Clooney the best thing at Golden Globes 2015?

By HT

Newlyweds George Clooney and Amal Clooney made a grand entrance at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

Needless to say, Amal brought a healthy dose of class to the annual gala. In a sea of blinding showbiz schmoozing and Hollywood brouhaha, the human rights lawyer was the picture of serenity and sophistication. With a clearly smitten George on her arm, Amal was a cut above the rest. We have to say that she (and by default George) was the best thing about Golden Globes 2015.

The couple of the moment appeared to be in great spirits, and for good reason, considering that George -- who recycled his Armani wedding tuxedo-- was receiving the coveted Cecil B DeMille Award. He did give a beautiful lifetime achievement award speech, FYI.

But let's be honest, what made the pair's first big Hollywood event together, one to remember, was not his speech where he thanked his new bride, saying, "It's a humbling thing when you find someone to love. Even better when you've been waiting your whole life... Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn't be more proud to be your husband."

We loved this bit more: While husband George gushed about how proud he is of her, as he received his lifetime achievement award -- Amal arranged her face to appear to be listening very hard and not at all embarrassed. Yes, she was the perfect Golden Globe? prom date.

We'll admit: Amal made us fall in love, a little bit more. For starters, Clooney's wife set foot onto the red carpet at the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards looking stunning in her black, one-shouldered Dior Haute Couture gown. And just because the human rights lawyer agreed to be husband George's date, doesn't mean she was caught dead doing all the traditional stuff. Such as, taking shots.

You should know that during an awkward interview with Giuliana Rancic at the red carpet, Amal and George were offered shots of his specially-arranged tequila, but they politely refused. Surely it goes without saying that Amal is too classy for tequila shots, even if it is her husband's. Also, we loved her for expertly dodging the mani cam (and wedding ring blather) by wearing white gloves. Smart.

And those gloves, you ask? Where did she get them? They're her own!

We'll be honest, we're not sure why Amal chose to accessorise her black Dior gown with those all-white gloves, but we just loved that they were homemade -- by her own fair hand, no less. "She sewed them this morning," George revealed on the red carpet. "She's very handy." Cheeky, but cute.

But that's not all. Amal used the red carpet to make a political statement. Along with the gloves, she accessorised her gown with a badge that read 'Je Suis Charlie'. She acknowledged the political crisis in France with the accessory that said 'Je Suis Charlie,' for Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical newspaper, whose staff was recently murdered.

And we saved the best for last. In case, you missed, Golden Globe hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler summed up the greatness of Amal perfectly with their best gag of the night.

"George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year. Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an advisor to Kofi Annan regarding Syria, and was selected for a three-person UN commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip. So tonight... her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award."

Excellent.
