Was Alam Clooney the best thing at Golden Globes 2015?

By HT

Newlyweds George Clooney and Amal Clooney made a grand entrance at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

Needless to say, Amal brought a healthy dose of class to the annual gala. In a sea of blinding showbiz schmoozing and Hollywood brouhaha, the human rights lawyer was the picture of serenity and sophistication. With a clearly smitten George on her arm, Amal was a cut above the rest. We have to say that she (and by default George) was the best thing about Golden Globes 2015.

The couple of the moment appeared to be in great spirits, and for good reason, considering that George -- who recycled his Armani wedding tuxedo-- was receiving the coveted Cecil B DeMille Award. He did give a beautiful lifetime achievement award speech, FYI.

But let's be honest, what made the pair's first big Hollywood event together, one to remember, was not his speech where he thanked his new bride, saying, "It's a humbling thing when you find someone to love. Even better when you've been waiting your whole life... Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn't be more proud to be your husband."

We loved this bit more: While husband George gushed about how proud he is of her, as he received his lifetime achievement award -- Amal arranged her face to appear to be listening very hard and not at all embarrassed. Yes, she was the perfect Golden Globe? prom date.

We'll admit: Amal made us fall in love, a little bit more. For starters, Clooney's wife set foot onto the red carpet at the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards looking stunning in her black, one-shouldered Dior Haute Couture gown. And just because the human rights lawyer agreed to be husband George's date, doesn't mean she was caught dead doing all the traditional stuff. Such as, taking shots.

You should know that during an awkward interview with Giuliana Rancic at the red carpet, Amal and George were offered shots of his specially-arranged tequila, but they politely refused. Surely it goes without saying that Amal is too classy for tequila shots, even if it is her husband's. Also, we loved her for expertly dodging the mani cam (and wedding ring blather) by wearing white gloves. Smart.

And those gloves, you ask? Where did she get them? They're her own!

We'll be honest, we're not sure why Amal chose to accessorise her black Dior gown with those all-white gloves, but we just loved that they were homemade -- by her own fair hand, no less. "She sewed them this morning," George revealed on the red carpet. "She's very handy." Cheeky, but cute.

But that's not all. Amal used the red carpet to make a political statement. Along with the gloves, she accessorised her gown with a badge that read 'Je Suis Charlie'. She acknowledged the political crisis in France with the accessory that said 'Je Suis Charlie,' for Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical newspaper, whose staff was recently murdered.

And we saved the best for last. In case, you missed, Golden Globe hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler summed up the greatness of Amal perfectly with their best gag of the night.

"George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year. Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an advisor to Kofi Annan regarding Syria, and was selected for a three-person UN commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip. So tonight... her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award."

Excellent.
