Box office: 'Sultan' rakes in Rs. 180 crore in five days

Salman Khan-starrer Sultan mints Rs 180.36 crore in five days; poised to shatter lifetime figures of his last two blockbusters

He has done it in the past and he's at it again. Salman Khan is changing the mathematics at the box office with his new release, 'Sultan'. The wrestling drama co-starring Anushka Sharma, which hit screens on the eve of Eid, ended its first weekend figures at Rs 180.36 crore.

So far, this is his best opener and tenth film since 'Dabangg' (2010) to hit the Rs 100-crore jackpot, not to mention, the biggest hit of 2016.

In the overseas market, the Ali Abbas Zafar film has also done phenomenal business with a major chunk of revenue coming in from the Gulf countries. A mid-week release worked to Sultan's advantage, helping it maintain an average daily business of nearly Rs 36 crore although it could not break the opening day collection record of Rs 44.97 crore held by Shah Rukh Khan's 'Happy New Year' (2014).

Trade experts expected the film to make Rs 150-160 crore by Sunday, but the audience response has taken them by surprise. "To say Sultan has proved to be a box office juggernaut will be an understatement. The film should comfortably reach the Rs 200-crore mark by the end of its sixth day (Monday), thereby, becoming the fastest money-spinner in the history of Bollywood. It has done exceptionally well overseas too. One has to see if it can touch Rs 350 crore and become the biggest blockbuster of all time," says trade guru Amod Mehra.

Trade pundit Taran Adarsh says Salman has raised the bar for Hindi film business and surpassed the lifetime business of several BO biggies in just five days. "Even if you took Sultan's three-day collections into account (Rs 105.34 crore), you will see it has beaten the collections of his last two releases - 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' (Rs 102.60 crore) and 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' (Rs 101.47 crore) - over the same time period. 'Sultan' is, clearly, smashing records, and seems set to cross Rs 200 crore. However, now one has to wait and watch if it can cruise past Bajrangi's lifetime numbers and emerge as Salman's biggest hit," he adds.

Salman's top grossers

'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' (2015) - Rs 320.48 cr
'Kick' (2014) - Rs 233.8 cr
'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' (2015) - Rs 207.40 cr
'Ek Tha Tiger' (2012) - Rs 198 cr
'Dabangg 2' (2012) - Rs 158.4 cr
'Bodyguard' (2011) - Rs 142 cr
'Dabangg' (2010) - Rs 138.88 cr
'Ready' (2011) - Rs 120 cr

Bollywood's all time biggest

'pk' (2014) - Rs 340.6 cr
'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' (2015) - Rs 320.48 cr
'Dhoom 3' (2013) - Rs 286.03 cr
'Krrish 3' (2013) - Rs 244.3 cr
'Kick' (2014) - Rs 233.8 cr
'Chennai Express' (2013) - Rs 227.21 cr

At a time when actors are giving maximum attention to fitness, Varun Dhawan says he idolises superstar Akshay Kumar.

"I think there was a phase of six and eight pack abs but now it is back to a phase where health is important. Look at Akshay Kumar, he has been fit for so many years despite injuries," Varun told reporters here at an event of his upcoming film "Dishoom".

Varun says he wishes to be as fit as Akshay when he grows old.

"Akshay has tremendous fitness level. I wish when I grow that old if I can be that fit then it will be great." His "Dishoom" co-star John Abraham was also present at the event, where the duo shared some fitness tips.

"One should dedicate at least an hour to fitness, be it Yoga or anything else. Working out shouldn't tire you, it should rejuvenate you. One needs to be fit and flexible," he said.

The 29-year-old actor said his director father David Dhawan wasn't too much into fitness but things seem to be changing now.

"The most difficult person to get to the gym is my dad. He just doesn't listen to anybody. When I started threatening him about if he wants to see his grand children or not (that) is when he started going to gym. He goes for walk and it is good thing," he added.

"I don't have a strict diet as my metabolism is too high. Pizza and brownie with ice-cream is my weakness."

He also revealed actress Parineeti Chopra has a special number in 'Dishoom'.

"The song will be out on July 12. One tip I received from John was to have honey. Once she (Parineeti) was feeling weak and I gave her honey," Varun said when asked about giving fitness tips to Parineeti.

Directed by Rohit Dhawan, 'Dishoom' opens in cinema houses on July 29.

'Shorgul' release date shifted back to June 24

'Shorgul' release date shifted back to June 24
Thursday, June 16, 2016 16:00 IST
By Santa Banta News Network
'Shorgul' will now release on June 24 instead of June 17.

A 24 FPS Films Production, the Jimmy Sheirgill and Ashutosh Rana-starrer is based on intolerance and aspires to make audiences contemplate where humanity stands amidst the noise of religious, social, political and economic prejudice.

The makers of the film had advanced their release date by a week, but now the film's producer Swatantra Vijay Singh says he wants to avoid a clash with 'Udta Punjab', which is releasing on June 17, at the box office.

"We don't want this message to be lost when an equally socially relevant film like 'Udta Punjab' is releasing and hence, the rescheduling, as audiences need time to relate and consume such heavy-on content thinking films," Swatantra Vijay Singh said in a statement.

"Our film has a strong message that comes in the form of a wake-up call for the masses to be the change they always wanted to see. This is a film that makes us think. Our film reinstates the gross reality of today where the voice of the common man is being manipulated to favour socio-political motives," he added.

Also featuring Sanjay Suri, Narendra Jha, Hiten Tejwani, Eijaz Khan, Suha Gezen, Anirudh Dave and Deepraj Rana, 'Shorgul' will touch upon grave subjects that have transpired in the recent past such as Muzaffarnagar, Godhra, Babri Masjid riots apart from making references to bureaucratic misdoings, mind games and controversial master strokes of some high profile dignitaries.

Co-directed by Jitendra Tiwari and P. Singh, the lyrics have been penned by senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal.

Shah Rukh Khan: I'm an over indulgent father

Shah Rukh Khan: I'm an over indulgent father

Shah Rukh Khan might be known as a doting father to his three kids but the superstar believes he indulges them more than needed.

The 50-year-old actor says he is a proud father to Aryan, 19, Suhana, 16 and toddler AbRam, who celebrated his third birthday last week.

From taking the little one to IPL matches to playing host to his daughter's friends, SRK's love for his children is not hidden from his fans and the actor says he loves to spoil the kids.

"I am a very indulgent father. In fact, I am over indulgent. I spoil them a lot," the "Fan" told reporters here at the launch of KidZania, a global indoor theme park. The Delhi/NCR branch of KidZania comes three years after Shah Rukh launched the park in Ghatkopar in Mumbai. The Bollywood star co-owns the theme park.

When asked whether AbRam is fond of rides and if the actor would bring him to KidZania, Shah Rukh said, "I think AbRam would love to come here. When I thought of making this (KidZania), I wanted to do it for my kids but by the time it got made, they grew up. So, now, I would love to get AbRam here. But first I will take him to the Ghatkopar one."

For the actor, bringing such an experience for kids to India is a matter of pride and he said this endevour stands as most special among all the ventures that he has forayed into.

"I am very proud of this. The Mumbai one has been doing great and that encouraged me to bring KidZania to Delhi/NCR.

In fact, this one is far bigger than the other park. I am sure kids and families will love it.

"Out of everything that I have ever done, this is what I am most proud of, that I have done something for children."

Shah Rukh intends to open the park in Chennai, Benguluru and of course Kolkata, a city the "Dilwale" star shares a special bond with.

"We will take it to Chennai and Benguluru and Kolkata too... The process takes time as we need a huge place and its entrance and exit should be safe for kids.

"Also training of the staff is an important task as families will leave their children with the people here. But these are long term plans which we will fulfill slowly and gradually."

Shah Rukh added he wants KidZania to be affordable for all stratas of society and has joined hands with a couple of NGOs to enable children from poor families experience KidZania.

The "Chennai Express" star arrived at the launch in style, walking the ramp with a few kids, who were dressed in their future dream avatars. He also interacted with them, answering their questions about his childhood and his dreams as a child.

During the endearing interaction, Shah Rukh revealed that as a child he wanted to become either an army officer or a teacher.

Concluding the event on a filmy note, Bollywood's romance king mouthed dialogues from his 2012 drama "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" as young girls and women cheered on and also obliged his male fans in the crowd by speaking a few lines from the teaser of his upcoming action thriller "Raees".
